Safety & Quality Control Policy
Last updated: 4 October 2026
Building work carries real risk, and the quality of what sits behind a finished wall matters as much as the finish itself. This policy sets out how YHY Engineering (“we”, “us” or “our”) protects the people on and around our sites and how we check the standard of our work, from interior fit-outs in occupied homes to new construction. It applies to our employees, subcontractors, suppliers and visitors on every project.
At a glance
- No task is so urgent that it cannot be done safely.
- Materials are checked on delivery, and work is inspected before it is covered up.
- Occupied homes and offices are protected from dust, damage and avoidable disruption.
- Every project ends with a joint inspection and a written snag list.

1. Our commitment
We aim to complete every project without injury to anyone and without damage to our clients’ or their neighbours’ property, and to hand over work that matches the approved drawings and specifications. Safety and quality are planned at the start of a project, supervised throughout and reviewed at the end.
2. Who is responsible
- Management provides the supervision, equipment and time needed to work safely and to the required standard.
- Site supervisors brief the team, check the work area each day, enforce this policy and stop any activity they consider unsafe.
- Workers and subcontractors follow instructions, use the protective equipment provided and report hazards, defects and near misses immediately.
- Clients and visitors are asked to visit by arrangement, stay with the supervisor and follow site instructions.
3. Site safety practices
Planning before work starts. We review the site for hazards such as existing electrical and gas services, the condition of the structure, access routes and neighbouring properties, and plan the sequence of work around them.
Briefings. People new to a site are told about its hazards and rules before they begin, and supervisors hold short briefings when the work or the risks change.
Protective equipment. Helmets, safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, dust masks and safety harnesses are used as the task requires.
Working at height. Scaffolding and ladders are checked before use, open edges and stair voids are guarded or covered, and materials are not stacked where they can fall.
Electrical safety. Circuits are isolated before work on them, temporary connections are kept protected and off wet floors, and damaged tools and leads are taken out of use.
Structural and excavation work. Load-bearing walls, beams, columns and slabs are not cut or altered without an engineer’s instruction. Excavations are supported where needed and barricaded.
Fire prevention. Welding, cutting and grinding are kept away from combustible material. Paints, thinners, lacquers and adhesives are stored closed and ventilated, and a fire extinguisher is kept on site.
Housekeeping. Debris is cleared regularly, walkways and exits are kept open, and materials are stacked securely.
First aid and emergencies. A first-aid kit and emergency contact numbers are kept on site, and the supervisor knows the route to the nearest hospital.
4. Working in occupied homes and offices
Much interior and renovation work takes place while people are living or working in the building. On these projects we:
- separate the work area and use dust barriers and floor protection;
- cover or move furniture and fittings that are staying in place;
- keep noisy work within the hours allowed by the housing society or building management;
- ask that children and pets are kept away from the work area;
- secure tools, materials and the premises at the end of each day;
- clean the work area daily and remove debris from the property regularly.
5. Neighbours and the public
We plan deliveries and debris removal to avoid blocking streets and shared access, barricade any work that affects a public area, and take care not to damage adjoining walls, services and landscaping. Concerns raised by neighbours are passed to the site supervisor and dealt with promptly.
6. How we control quality
Approved drawings and samples. Work is carried out from drawings and specifications approved by the client. Finishes such as tiles, veneers, laminates, paint colours and hardware are confirmed against approved samples before they are ordered.
Material checks. Deliveries are checked for brand, grade and quantity against the specification. Cement is stored dry and off the ground, steel is kept clear of soil, and boards and timber are stored flat and protected from moisture.
Structure. Reinforcement is checked against the drawings for bar size, spacing, laps and cover before concrete is poured. Concrete is placed, compacted and cured properly, and masonry is checked for line, level and plumb.
Plumbing, electrical and waterproofing. Water supply lines are pressure-tested before walls and floors are closed. Wiring and conduits are inspected before plaster or ceiling work, and circuits are tested before handover. Bathrooms, terraces and roofs are water-tested after waterproofing and before tiling.
Interiors and finishes. Custom furniture and joinery are built from approved shop drawings. Surfaces are checked for level and alignment, tile joints for consistency, paintwork for an even finish, and doors, drawers and hardware for smooth operation.
Inspection before covering up. Work that will be hidden, such as reinforcement, pipes, conduits and waterproofing, is inspected and photographed before the next stage begins.
7. Subcontractors and suppliers
We choose subcontractors and suppliers on the strength of their past work and reliability. They work under our supervision, are bound by this policy and are responsible for the conduct of their own teams on site. Work that does not meet the specification is corrected before it is accepted.
8. Records and client communication
We keep progress photographs and records of inspections, approvals and variations for each project, and share regular updates with the client. Clients are welcome to inspect the work at agreed stages. How we handle these records is explained in our Privacy Policy.
9. Handover and aftercare
Before handover we walk through the completed work with the client and list any outstanding items in a snag list, which we then complete. Product warranties and care instructions are passed on at handover. Defects reported afterwards are handled as set out in your written agreement with us and our Terms and Conditions.
10. Reporting an incident or concern
Anyone, including clients and neighbours, can raise a safety or quality concern with the site supervisor or by calling our office on 0330 7034358. Incidents and near misses are reported to management, investigated and followed by corrective action so that they are not repeated.
11. Review of this policy
We review this policy periodically and after any significant incident, and update it as our work, our team and good practice develop.
